ABOUT
Malakai is an adornment brand known for iconic celebrity pieces and its deep roots in alternative culture. Our values – artistry, craftsmanship, and a kinship with the earth – guide the design of our creations. With each genderless adornment, Malakai seeks to evolve the perception of beauty and give form to fantasy.
Malakai emerged in Berlin and Bali as a natural evolution of House of Malakai, the namesake of its visionary creative director. House of Malakai first began in 2013 at their atelier in Bali, Indonesia, quickly establishing themselves as leaders in wearable art, millinery, and jewellery. The brand captivated global audiences and became a favorite among iconic celebrities, including Beyoncé, Madonna, Rihanna, FKA Twigs, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, CL, Doja Cat, and Nicki Minaj. Their creations have graced the pages of Vogue, Dazed, W Magazine, V Magazine, Rolling Stone, and many other leading fashion publications.
Malakai is celebrated for their unparalleled craftsmanship and bold artistry. Among their most iconic works are the headdress and body jewellery designed for Beyoncé’s unforgettable 2017 Grammy performance of Love Drought. Malakai’s headpieces have adorned the catwalks of Rick Owens, Balmain, and Manish Arora, as well as the opening of Madonna’s Celebration tour. The brand also created show-stopping designs for the Nicki Minaj Queen album cover and the Iris Van Herpen fashion show, solidifying their place at the intersection of high fashion and celebrity culture.
At the heart of Malakai’s couture collections are sculptural, collectible art pieces crafted from precious and semi-precious materials. These wearable masterpieces are designed to transcend fashion, becoming timeless objects of cultural and artistic significance. Beyond wearable art, Malakai embraces the co-creation of art photography as an integral part of their creative vision, collaborating with photographers and artists to explore storytelling through imagery.
Drawing on a rich tapestry of influences, Malakai weaves together themes of light, sound, physics, metaphysics, and culture to create designs that transcend the ordinary. Their work reflects a seamless integration of ancient traditions and cutting-edge technology, evoking a sense of timelessness and universality. With a background in performance art and electronic music, Malakai pushes creative boundaries, as demonstrated in a 2024 co-directed performance piece with Erykah Badu and Balinese Cejak dancers—a striking fusion of art, music, and movement.
Malakai and House of Malakai stand as dual pillars in the fashion world, offering couture masterpieces and streetwear collections that have achieved cult status among fashion-forward youth in cities such as London, Tokyo, New York, Berlin, and Seoul. The brand is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to sustainability, combining handcrafted, ethically sourced materials with modern digital techniques.
The heart of Malakai lies in their ability to merge the past and future. Inspired by science, metaphysics, archaeology, revolutionary movements, and underground cultures, Malakai’s designs transcend time and place. Each piece tells a story—a synthesis of ancient memory and future innovation, imbued with the power of cultural resonance and the ethereal beauty of the cosmos.
